UPDATE: Corona loans for students in emergency situations

Published at

For students who have got into a financial emergency situation due to the Corona crisis, the Studierendenwerk has now launched a Corona loan for quick and uncomplicated help. The state now also offers BW emergency aid funds.

The Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim has been offering loans to students for many years. Due to the corona crisis, the Studierendenwerk has now issued another loan, the corona loan, with relaxed lending criteria. This is intended to provide quick and uncomplicated help to students who have lost their part-time job or otherwise got into a financial emergency situation due to the pandemic.

On April 28, the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg announced that it will now also support students in need with an emergency aid fund. Both loans are intended to provide quick and uncomplicated help to students who have lost their part-time jobs or otherwise got into a financial emergency situation due to the pandemic.

Emergency aid fund of the country:

The country is providing a total of one million euros. It will be granted as an interest-free loan of up to 450 euros for the months of April and May - a total of up to 900 euros (MWK press release of 28.4.2020). Students can now submit applications for the state's emergency aid fund. Should the state's funds not be sufficient, the Corona loan from the Studierendenwerk will remain in place.

Key points on the Corona loan:

  • The loan is intended exclusively for own, personally necessary expenses that are directly related to the studies; it is not intended as an acquisition loan.
  • The student can be granted a loan with a maximum total amount of 1,200 € without a guarantee (Bürgschaft).
  • The loan is generally granted without interest.
  • The term for repayment of the loan is up to 24 months for amounts up to 400 € and up to 36 months for amounts over 400 €.
  • Repayment of the loan must begin twelve months after disbursement.
  • An administration fee is not charged.
