Registration at town hall

Old City Hall Geislingen
Old City Hall Geislingen

Just as all German citizens do, international students must register their place of residence at the Residents’ Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt) in the town hall within one week after arrival.

For registration you need to bring:

  • your passport or identification card
  • notification of admission
  • tenancy agreement (Anmeldeformular) signed by the caretaker
  • 1 passport photograph
  • certificate of Scholarship if you receive a scholarship from your university
  • for non-EU students who have entered without a visa and who have no scholarship certificate: ‘Verpflichtungserklärung’ which must be signed by your parents

Keep your confirmation of registration (Meldebestaetigung) safe. If you leave Nuertingen/Geislingen for your home country or to move somewhere else at the end of the semester you have to notify the Einwohnermeldeamt of your move.

Residence Permit

Residence Permit

Students from the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland do not need a residence permit but they must prove that they have health insurance and that they can finance their studies.

Non-EU students and students who do not have the residence permit for the purpose of studying in their passport (student visa) have to go to the International Registration Authority (Auslaenderbehoerde) in the town hall to apply for a residence permit. You need to bring with you

  • Passport valid for the whole period of your stay
  • Proof that you have private or statutory health insurance
  • Letter of acceptance (Zulassungsbescheid) from your university
  • Proof of financial resources (Finanzierungsnachweis). This can be a bank statement (in English or German) or a statement by your parents showing that you have sufficient financial resources for your stay in Germany. This statement (Verpflichtungserklaerung) has to be confirmed/issued by the embassy or consulate in your home country.
EU (ERASMUS) students only need the confirmation issued by the international office of  Nuertingen/Geislingen university
  • Confirmation that you have accommodation (Wohnraumbescheinigung) available at the dormitory (or from your landlord in case of private accommodation)
  • 1 biometric passport photograph
  • Money to pay for processing fees (50/60 € - not for some scholarship holders!)

You need to do the registrations during the orientation week. Your mentor is informed where to go and will help you fill out all the necessary forms.
